Reading Schemes

At St Anne’s, we use the Big Cat Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme in Reception and Year 1.  This is matched exactly to the child’s phonic ability and links to the phases and graphemes they know.  These books are used in during the reading sessions and then they are taken home to consolidate after three reading sessions.

When the children in KS1 have completed all books in this set, and are therefore fluent decoders, we use a variety of reading schemes throughout which are all book banded into levels.  Children use these schemes to read both at school and home.

When the children are in KS2, they are expected to begin on the Oxford Reading Tree book banded books.  These progress from Year 3 through to Year 6.  These books are taken home to read.

All children are assessed half termly to judge their fluency and understanding of the text.
